Title: Eve's Bayou
Director: Kasi Lemmons
Format: VHS and DVD
Price: $13.99 US VHS, $19.98 DVD £12.99 UK VHS
Recommended By: Paula Graves (Paula's Website)
Reason: Why do I love this movie? It's lush, passionate, messy and alive. Part Southern gothic, part magical realism, this is a movie about the emotions, fears and realizations we all experience as we move from childhood into maturity. Writer Kasi Lemmons sets her tale in a distant time (the early 1960s), an out of the way place (the Louisiana bayou) and she peoples her story with a strong African-American cast of characters. But the story she tells resonates with modern day viewers, in big cities and small towns, no matter what color their skin. EVE'S BAYOU got lost in the crowd when it first debuted in 1997. It's a shame--I think it was the best picture that year. I hope you'll take a look and see if you agree. Also available at Amazon.co.uk.

Title: Kirk Mitchell Series
Author: Kirk Mitchell
Format: Hard and soft cover
Price: See links for prices (both $'s and £'s)
Recommended By: MD1016@aol.com (MD's FanFic Site)
Reason: I'd like to recommend three books by Kirk Mitchell. They're a suspense/mystery trilogy about Emmett Parker, an agent with the Bureau of
Indian Affairs and his partner Anna Turnipseed, special agent with the FBI,
and their investigations into serial killings that happen on Indian
Reservations in the American west. The sexual tension is delicious (and
promises to be much, much more), the angst is inspired, and the mystery is a
true page turner. The first book is called Cry Dance, and its sequel is
Spirit Sickness. The third book, Ancient Ones, is due out in stores in early
2001. I highly recommend all of these books, and really anything by Kirk
Mitchell. He knows how to spin stories. (Also available at Amazon.co.uk: Cry Dance and Spirit Sickness.)

Title: Good Will Hunting
Director: Gus Van Sant
Format: VHS and DVD
Price: $13.99 US VHS | $20.99 US DVD | £12.99 UK VHS | £14.99 UK DVD
Recommended By: Linda Mejia (Linda's Website)
Reason: Good Will Hunting is one of my all time favorite
movies. I recommend this flick with all my heart.
If you haven't seen it, watch it as soon as possible.
If you have, run back and watch it again. I own it
and watch it at least once a month. It is such an
emotional and touching movie and deserves as much
praise as possible. Robin Williams is superb as well
as Matt Damon. Buy it, you'll be glad you did :) Also available at Amazon.co.uk.

Title: Play
Artist: Moby
Format: CD
Price: $12.58 US £9.99 UK
Recommended By: Theresa of X-Files Mind's Eye
Reason: I just got this CD this past weekend, and I
totally love it! Songs from the CD have appeared
in the X-files (that "speak to me baby, in the
middle of the night" song -- don't know the title
to that one-- appeared in All Things) Gertie's note: That was The Sky is Broken and Harsh
Realm (the song "Run On")
The CD is so versatile, with songs that sound like
swing music, to blues, to modern, to instrumental.
I'd say that this is one of my favorite new CDs,
and I don't buy a lot of music. Also available at Amazon.co.uk.

Title: A Cheap and Evil Girl
Artist/Author: Bree Sharp
Format: CD
Price: $12.99 US
Recommended By: Gertie
Reason: Bree Sharp's debut album contains the song "David Duchovny" which boasts the profound lyrics "David Duchovny, I want you to love me, to kiss and to hug me, debrief and debug me." An absolute classic for any David Duchovny fan. Click here for a sample.

Title: George Lucas in Love
Director: Joe Nussbaum
Format: VHS
Price: $7.99 US
Recommended By: Gertie
Reason: Discover the "true" origins of Star Wars in the short comedy spoof. Being a huge Star Wars fan since A New Hope came out in 1977, this movie got me right in the funny bone. It is a parody of the movie Shakespeare In Love (which won 7 Academy Awards in 1998) with George Lucas playing the roll of Romeo and Princess Leia playing the role of Juliet. Paying homage to The Great Mr. Lucas is a long over due action.

Title: Wrecking Ball
Artist: Emmylou Harris
Format: CD
Price: $13.99 US £11.99 UK
Recommended By: Gillian Anderson
Reason: During a online chat with Gillian she was asked, "What 3 records would you bring to a desert island?" She replied, "Cake, Emmy Lou Harris Wreking Ball, Jane Siberry when I was a boy... Cake's Fashion Nugget is absolute fav." (The entire transcript of this chat session is available at GAWS.) This album is also available from Amazon.co.uk for UK Philes.

Title: Terms of Endearment
Director: James L. Brooks
Format: VHS
Price: $9.95 US £15.49 UK
Recommended By: David Duchovny
Reason: "I hate to admit this, but I do love Terms of Endearment. I think this is still a manly thing, because who knew Debra Winger was going to get so sick? It kills me when Shirley [MacLaine] is demanding those pills in the hospital. I'm weeping." Pause. "Can I change my answer to The Terminator? It makes me sound more like a guy." Gertie's note: I'm going to have to agree with David on this one, although Beaches
and Steel
Magnolias tie for a close second in my book. This movie is also available from VideoParadise.com in PAL format.
